Learn about how to increase the effectiveness of your meetings. Whether you are a labor-management  committee, a club, or any organization, meeting effectiveness is essential. The videos in this series look at types of meetings, scheduling, meeting planning, agendas, and other factors than can make your meetings better.


Interest Based Problem Solving Channel

Columbus Area Labor-Management Committee encourages groups to use Interest Based Problem Solving (IBPS). This process, which is based on Interest-Based Bargaining, enables groups to make decisions based on the factors which are most important to them. IBPS works with any type of group, including labor-management teams. It avoids traditional position taking and blame finding, replacing them with a mutual effort to resolve concerns.

The videos in this series explain how to use the interest based process, its steps, and ways to enhance the effectiveness of IBPS with your team.

There are a variety of tools teams can use to help them identify problems, gather ideas, determine options, and make decisions based on available data.           Effective meetings require good planning. This video looks at some of the elements of planning for good meetings.

     Meeting Planning - Part 2
          The concluding segment on planning for effective meetings. The program examines some procedures that can boost the productivity of your meetings and cautions against some practices that can hurt meetings.

     Meeting Agendas - Part 1
          Effective meetings require good, well-constructed agendas distributed to group members in advance. This video is the first of a 2-part series on constructing effective meeting agendas, and provides suggestions for the format of your agendas.

   Meeting Agendas - Part 2
          How does your team develop its meeting agenda and how is it distributed? In this video, we suggest that the best time to set the agenda for your next meeting is at the end of the current meeting. We also offer suggestions about how and when to distribute the agenda and look at other ideas about meeting agendas.

  Labor-Management Committee Meeting Agendas
          Labor-Management Committee meetings require some different approaches and skills than other committees. This begins with the construction of a single agenda containing items from both labor and management. This presentation focuses on how to build an effective agenda as well as some things to avoid.

          Committees often question how often or how long they should meet. This presentation discusses these concerns along with other scheduling issues that can help improve your meeting structure.

Types of Meetings
          Just as there are different types of teams, there are several different reasons for groups to meet. This video looks at some types of meetings, such as information gathering or problem solving, and offers tips regarding each.

Meeting Minutes - Part One
          Your meeting minutes can impact the quality of your meetings. In the first of this two-part series you can learn how to take minutes that effectively capture the important parts of your meetings and that your members will be able to read and use. Also see what things should NOT be part of your minutes and can hurt your team.

          The final part of our presentation on meeting minutes looks at some of the ways your minutes can help advance work of a team. We look at the content that belongs in minutes and a suggested format that has been helpful to teams. Procedures for approving and distributing the minutes are discussed.

          Having the right team composition is important if they are to be effective. This video discusses some of the important factors in team formation. We discuss how to be sure a team is representative of their constituents and contains diverse approaches and styles.

          Some groups like to use subcommittees to help study and resolve issues, while others so not like the process. This video discusses the use of subcommittees and how to get the most from them.

Interest Based Problem Solving Channel

Interest Based Problem Solving Overview
          This video introduces the Interest Based Problem Solving process and the reasons why the process works for any type of team. IBPS enables groups to resolve problems without becoming positional or reverting to the behaviors often seen during traditional problem solving.

The Steps of Interest Based Problem Solving
The IBPS process consists of several steps, beginning with identifying the problem and ending with coming to consensus on a solution. It is important these steps be followed. This program reviews the steps of IBPS and looks at ways to use the process effectively.

Interest Based Problem Solving: Step 1 - Identifying Problems
          IBPS begins with identifying problems or concerns that need to be addressed. It could be a problem assigned to the group or one from a list brainstormed by the team. This program outlines the process of problem identification, offers suggestions on how to do the process efficiently, and gives suggestions on things to avoid, such as confusing symptoms with problems.

Interest Based Problem Solving: Steps 2 and 3 - Identifying Interests
Identifying interests is a key part of the Interest Based Problem Solving Process. As the parties generate their lists of interests, the overlap reveals the common interests among them. By focusing on these common interests, the members will find it easier to find acceptable solutions.
       This video focuses on the process of identifying and using interests, and offers suggestions on how to conduct this process effectively.

Interest Based Problem Solving: Step 4 - Identifying Options
Don't think of problem solving as finding just one possible answer. Problems usually have several good possible solutions. The Interest Based Problem Solving Process encourages participants to develop as long a list of potential solutions as possible, then determine the one or ones to be implemented.
        This video discusses the generation of options for solving problems during IBPS, presenting useful suggestions on how to do the process effectively along with some things to consider that can impede your work.

Interest Based Problem Solving: Step 5 and 6 - Identifying and Using Standards
      In the Interest-Based Problem Solving Process standards are used to help determine which options are potentially acceptable solutions to the problem. The use of standards creates a process that is based on objective facts, not emotions or traditional behaviors.
      This video discusses how to develop standards and offers three standards that are useful on just about any problem. The process for how to use standards to judge options is presented.

Judging Options Using Standards
While the process of using standards to evaluate options may seem a bit daunting, it is really quite straightforward. In this program, we look at an example of how the process works. A brainstormed list of standards is used to determine which option(s) meet the criteria and are possible solutions to the problem.

This process can be used in Interest-Based Problem Solving or in any situation to help make a selection.

Interest Based Problem Solving Summary - Part One
Our series on Interest Based Problem Solving continues with this 2-part summary of the overall process. In part one, we review the initial steps of IBPS and offer suggestions on how to get the most out of each. We also offer some cautions about things to avoid when attempting to solve problems using this process.

In Part 2 of our Interest Based Problem Solving Summary we conclude our look at the interest based process. Consensus Decision Making
     Consensus Decision Making is the best way for groups to make decisions. It allows for everyone to be heard without anyone dominating the process. Decisions are not final until everyone is in consensus. This video discusses the process of consensus and gives tips on how to arrive at consensus.
